Under $10: 10 minute pillow cover
This is a little project I whipped up with some fabric I had picked out for its color palette. The fabric is Ruby Star Rising - Viewfinders by Melody Miller and it was just what I was imagining as the colors for my living room. I had intended on sewing the pillow cover, but I tend to be a little impatient and easily distracted, so I went with fabric glue.
If I had been planning ahead of time, I would have taken more photos to turn this into an actual tutorial - all photos are from the completed project. I hope you get the gist of it!
What you need:
- fabric - enough to cover your pillow or cushion. Mine was a 1/2 yard, with fabric to spare
- fabric glue
- a cushion or pillow - presumably one that you already have, but you can buy pillow inserts in stores
The plan of the cover is like a fabric envelope, which allows you to pull the pillow out at any time to wash the cover. Place your cushion on the un-folded fabric, and fold the fabric over itself, to form an envelope with flap. This is just to measure the fabric: cut off any excess fabric. Mark where the folding will occur.
Next, I went along the entire edge of the fabric (the very edge!), and folded it over to prevent any fraying.
Next, I folded the fabric over on itself WITHOUT the pillow inside, noting where the folds of the cover should be. Where they ends overlap is the back of the pillow cover. The left side of the cover took up 2/3 of the cover's width; the right side took up 1/3. I then glued the front and back sides together at the seams, and partially glued the right and left sides together.
At this point, do not close off the cover entirely! Leave a gap, like a giant cloth tissue pocket. This is where you'll slide in the pillow.
Now I know that this says that it's a 10 minute project, but that's just the work aspect of the project. The fabric glue has to cure for 24 hours before you can put in the pillow. If you try to put the pillow in too soon, the seams could break. After 24 hours, the glue is strong enough to handle the stress of shoving the pillow through your cover. The fabric glue will be permanent, and you can even wash it.
